Welcome to Grade 5 Science - The Moon
![]() An Introduction to the Unit: I designed this curriculum for the content area of the Moon because students often have several misconceptions about the content. This content area can be broken down through a curriculum map in order to better help both educators and students. From designing a curriculum surrounding the concept of moon phases for fifth grade science it will outline the content, identify the standards used, show different forms of common assessments, and classroom activities designed for the content area of the Moon. The unit is broken down into lessons about moon phases, lunar and solar eclipses, and the relationship between the Sun, the Earth, and the Moon. By following the curriculum map others may be able to use this unit to teach the Moon and to help reduce and possibly eliminate student misconceptions about the Moon. | What will I find on this site? The following is a brief summary of this curriculum and content:This web page is centered around fifth grade science with a particular focus on moon phases, eclipses, tides and some other general information regarding the solar system. By clicking on the headings at the top of the page you will be able to navigate through this unit, including viewing a curriculum map. You will also find a literature review regarding current information and misconceptions about the Moon in elementary education. Connections to New York State Standards have been made. You will find both formative and summative assessments for the classroom activities, which can be found under the lesson plan tab. There is also a tab with a book list for trade books related to the Moon and the solar system for a range of reading levels, along with fun websites for students, parents, and educators to visit. ![]() |
